The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the medial collateral ligament (MCL), the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), and the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) can also be injured. When you injure a cruciate ligament you typically hear a loud "pop". These injuries are confirmed with an MRI. Torn knee cartilage is a meniscus injury. Chondromalacia is softening to the underside of the knee cap. Tendonitis is inflammation or irritation to the tendons. Sudden movements can cause the muscles around the knee contract and put strain or tear a tendon.
